No spark

1969 merc 20 hp pull start...motor has no spark...kill switch has been disconnected so it is not causing the problem ..both coil wires look good..had flywheel off magnets clean and in place..all wires look good ....ii have put a starter on this motor but is only connected to a battery to turn over motor to check for spark...motor is simple ..2 sets points...2 condensers...2 coils...help..bryan

With 2 sets of everything you have 2 magnetos. Look for something common to each mag.

Yep, like the stop switch. Often on those engines the stop switch is CLOSED when the engine is running and opens to shut it down. Make sure the stop switch is working correctly.

With 2 sets of everything you have 2 magnetos. Look for something common to each mag.

i think 8 bolts on flywheel removed and rotated no thought to timing..how do I align..?

I believe stop switch is bypassed...I kill it with choke...

Rotate the motor by hand until the top cyl is has the piston up at TDC.

Check the timing marks on the flywheel.

Unbolt and rotate the flywheel until the timing mark nearest TDC aligns, bolt it down.

Many of the smaller motors with points use a plastic block where the points wire passes thru. These blocks have a habit of cracking or arcing across, often unable to see until removed and inspected in strong sunlight. They arc and short to ground, killing spark.
