No Spark/Ignition

I have a 83 Johnson 70HP 3 cylinder. I've done a spark check and it seems #1 is getting good spark, #2 is getting none or not enough and #3 is getting okay spark. With the engine running pulling the lead to #1 causes the engine to stall, pulling #2 does nothing and pulling #3 causes a slight drop in RPM. Was wondering if anyone could tell me what the problem might be. The engine idles fine but when you put it into gear it stalls, which to me makes sense if it is not running on all cylinders.
Thanks in advance :)
Martin

Re: No Spark/Ignition

you probably have bad ignition coil/powerpack to these cylinders. However, do a compression check and make sure that you have enough to do the job.

Re: No Spark/Ignition

The compression was checked and I was told that it was okay. Can I change the ignition coil/powerpack for each cylinder or do I have to change the whole thing
Thanks
Martin

Re: No Spark/Ignition

mstritt - Go ahead & swap the coil & plug wire between #1 & #2. If that moves the problem fron #2 to #1 you'll know you got it. Post back & let us know. Don't believe you have a powerpack per cyl. You might check the Search function on the site to get info on checking the powerpack. Agree on the compression check (might have a blown headgasket).

robabot - Not sure if yours is a comment or ? If a question you will probably get better results if you try a seperate post.

Re: No Spark/Ignition

Thanks for the advice. So it is okay to take the spark plug wire from ignition coil #1 and put it on the #2 spark plug? I was thinking about doing that but I wasn't sure if somehow the timing would be affected, and yes sorry if I mispoke, there is only one power pack and three ignition coils.
Thanks
Martin

Re: No Spark/Ignition

yes, swap the wires to 1 and 2. This will tell you if it is an ignition coil.

Re: No Spark/Ignition

If you swap the Spark Plug lead wire then you also MUST swap the lead to the coil that comes from the power pack, or the engine will not run in correct time.
