Long journey but will try to summarize to relay facts/efforts to date. 1984 omc 1.6 l sea drive 115 hp. Boat sat for 8 years before we got our hands on it. So far we have replaced gas line, water separator, rebuilt carbs, fuel filter, plugs, plug wires, 3 of 4 coils (more on this in a minute), thermostats, water pump.

Late last year took it out and couldn't get on plane. Over the winter, we rebuilt carbs and got three new (actually used but new to us) coils as the wiring on the old ones were in various states of disrepair. Early this year, got her to run to full potential for 90+ minutes. Stopped and fueled up and within 5 minutes lost high end. Couldn't get on plane and limped back. Suspected fuel issue due to timing but changed fuel filter again and ran on temp tank with no difference.

Did some checking and found one cylinder not firing so ordered new coil (a real new one this time).

Back on river and ran good for 30 seconds and then limped home. More testing and found cylinder with the new coil fires inconsistently. It will run for a test of 5 minutes and then not for next couple test runs. The lack of firing follows the coil as we move it to different cylinders/power packs.

So short question, is it possible we got a bad coil or is there something else we should be focusing on?

Well, if the lack of firing follows the coil, then yes, the coil is bad. Very rare though.

Check the voltage output of the stator. If it's low, it won't fire all the coils all the time.

Similar experiences with coils. Make sure all connections and grounds are clean.
