Re: no spark at no 1 plug

If you are saying that if the top coil is connected to the bottom plug you get a spark then it suggests that the top coil, its points and its condenser are OK.

Check that you can get a good spark from each plug lead (forget the plugs) if you can look again at the plugs. If you cannot then look at the coil, the points (and the condenser) for whichever is not giving a good spark.

You can swap parts around from one cylinder to the other to check them. If the fault moves with the component you have found the faulty one.
Test the plugs in the same way. Swap'em over. If the fault moves with the plug it's a faulty plug.

Could be dirty points, check the faces of the points, they need to be shiny. I have the same issue with a 6hp johnson in my garage, today's project.

worked most of the day trying to remove flywheel even hammered on the top of the puller that thing wont move put the air gun to it and snaped 2 of the bolts that hold the puller on got 1 out and one to go never had one come off so hard also my son inlaw did a compression test on the motor today 140 in the cyclender thats not firing and 138 in the lower so i would say that that is a good sign

Yup , compresssion is awesome. Had my flywheel off in 2.3 seconds with an air hammer and a screw driver, points were black and oily, replaced both, awesome spark and runs like a champ.

No it was to take up the endplay on the crank, basically to hold the flywheel up.

Soak the top of the flywheel where the nut is with something like pbblaster for a couple of days and then try again.

You're supposed to be using shouldered stripper bolts with the puller, but at least grade 8 bolts at a minimum.

Anyway, with the 1976 motor aren't there (2) sets of breakers and only one coil under the flywheel, and (2) external coils?

I would smack it with a rubber mallot from underneith the flywheel, while the puller is tensioned up. I use a steel hammer, but I won't recemend it to anyone.:D

I use a length of 2x2 and a hand sledge. I usually don't recommend it because somebody might get carried away and break their flywheel....
