no serialnumber...

Hello,

I bought an old Mercury 500. From the late 70's i think. Problem is, i need some parts for the motor, and would like to order a service manual. But the sticker with the serialnumber isn't there.

Now i had a look at the powerhead. there is a Number (10174002), but this is NOT the serialnumber. I can't find this number in any of the lists. Is it possible to find out something about the motor though? I searched around, and found 2 postings with numbers starting at 1017..., they called it a "motor number".

Any ideas how to get the right manual and parts?

Thanks a lot
martin

Does the engine have a distributor?

If you can describe the engine...I might be able to narrow it down for you. Also depending on the parts you need some were specific to all models.

TMD

Hello,

Thanks for your response. There is a distributor in germany, and some dealers in Austria. You mean i should ask there?

I have a picture of the motor...
Maybe this helps? I tried to order the service manual for the Years 65-89 from iboats, since my motor is for sure in this range. But never got a response from iboats...

Check around this site:

web page

Also, if you get the year narrowed down, I would get one of these Manuals.

Factory Manual

Going on decals alone, your motor appears to be a '73 or '74.

Keep in mind that a serial number found on your motor block won't match up with any U.S. lists as your motor would likely have a European serial. I know Canadian serials started with 7-million, Australian/Asian started with 8-million, etc.
- Scott

Hello,

Thanks for all replies. Couldn't find out anything. The numbers on my motor are definitely no serials. I am in contact right now with a german specialist when it comes to outboard restoration, maybe he has an idea too..

Thanks
martin

I think TMD means "Distributor" as in an ignition part rather than a "Supplier". Pre- 1978 had a distributor and post 78 had "Coil pack" ignition consisting of trigger,1 coil per cyl and stator.

Re: no serialnumber...

Hello,

Sorry, my english...
Thanks for clarifying this, i will have a close look at the motor today again.

But i think there is a distributor, at least there is something that looks like the distributor on my old cars.

For sure it is pre 1978. The problem is, i need a manual and i need an "ignition coil". There are manauls at iboats for mercs from 69-89. For sure my motor would be covered there. But they do not deliver to Austria...
And without the serial, i can't order the coil. Thats my problem. Or do ou think any coil for Mercs from 70-73 could work?

many thanks
martin
