Garlic either used when cooking food or in tablet form helps keep 90% of all the southern biting insects. It does not work on black flies, yellow flies and horseflies nearly as well as other things. I would almost say it will keep turkey skeeters away.

You are having trouble with no-see-umms huh?<br /><br />Never tried garlic....Peter knows his stuff so I'd try it if i were you.<br /><br />Try sportsmans off....it works pretty good....just wash your hands real good so you don't get it on your fishing stuff....you may think its great but fish don't like it.<br /><br />I'll tell ya something from an old salt....Get used to it. I don't use anything for sand flees (no-see-umms) and after all these years they just don't faze me anymore...It was such a pain to try to keep um off me i just quit tring.<br /><br />Fat chance huh....I know...I swore up and down that i would quit fishing if i got bit by just one more...then I would catch a big trout and forget about them for awhile.<br /><br />If you ask me there is no such thing as no-see-umms....they are turkey skitters with cloaking devices. :D <br /><br />Leatherwood

Re: NO-SEE-UMM ??

Lived in Ft. Walton Beach during my Air Force days. We used "Skin So Soft" about half diluted with water. Worked well enough that the the repellant companies started comparing their products to it in commercials. Shops would sell it for about $8.00 bucks for 10 ozs. (10 years ago) I wouldn't have wanted to be there though when the local Avon rep found out the bait store was reselling it, "Ding Dong, AVON CALLING!" Whack, whack.

Howdy,<br /><br />I'm guessing you trying to keep off sandflies. This is one that is used downunder Rid, Baby oil & Dettol. <br /><br />Get a spray bottle empty the bottle of rid (insect repellent)in then the dettol (anaesthetic liquid) fill spray bottle with baby oil. The best part about this way is you don't touch your bait or gear just spray on. <br /><br />If camping well get dry cow pads place a short distance away from the camp all four sides (clear spot don't start a fire) light when lit hit them so they just smoulder the light smoke will clear them buggers away :) :) <br /><br />Hope it helps <br />Aussie Style :)

Re: NO-SEE-UMM ??

My family and 'friends' always take me along when they expect no-see-um problems. If I'm there, I get bit, they don't. (I've always had naturally attractive blood!) Once in a while I still try something new to keep them away, but now I've taken more to just stopping the itch after the fact. Benedryl Itch Relief is the best I've run into. It comes in different strenghts in a small pump-spray bottle and in a touch-tube. I keep both (spray & tube) handy in the trailer and at home.

Friend of mine swears by Vicks Vaporub spread on thick. Doesn't necessarily repel them, but when they hit it, they're zapped.

Hey i fish the flats in north florida , any thing oily --will keep them from bothering you. Utter butter , or something simular works great ( this is a a product which dairy farmers use) even sun screen works . Fabric softener sheets are some thing they don't like either. If that ain't enough , just run offshore a few miles . Hahahaha ------good fishing

Emby, I am also that person that everyone likes to have around. Skeeters bite me and leavw everyone else alone. I use afterbite. It is ammonia and works great especially if you get it on the bite soon after your bit. Repellant for skeeters is the order of the day now though with West Nile around. We haven't been hit as hard as some states, but there have a been a few cases and a few dead horses.

Get something with at least 21% Deet in it. e.g. Backwoods Off. They will hover around, but won't land. Keeps blackflies off in the swamp where nothing else will. I like the spray can, myself.

JS makes me think of this: ask people who bowhunt. especially lower states/warmer climes. i bet they have the lowdown on what works. hmmm i wonder if JS is a bowhunter :) <br />15yrs ago, i didn't find a dang thing that would keep the yellowflies from chowin on me, even thru face nets- in the swamps of S GA. but during bow season it was so hot i would sweat enuff to dilute the stuff into a turkeyskeetr buffet...

Re: NO-SEE-UMM ??

I have not figured out how to stop the yelowflys yet w/o usind deep woods off but I have found long sleves and pants usually take care of them. As I said before garlic in the diet or garlic pills. I have had friends try it with great results. In fact a fellow asked me how do you live with all the mosquitoes just Thursday. I told him and he stated that he was wondering why they were not bothering him at that point it time. He had just eaten out and garlic bread was on the menu. I know the skeeters were there because i even got one or two but others were being run off by them.
