I noticed on some motors (from the 60s) do not have a water pump seal, but the more modern johnny/rudes do. It appears BRP reverted back to a seal-less type water pump on my motor ('81 j25hp). See pic below, notice there's no seal between the impeller housing (#14) and cup (#63).
FYI. impeller housing part# 330560. Comes with water pump kit# 395270.

I'm wondering if the new water pump will work as well as my old one w/seal? Did this design work well on the 60s motors?

It doesn't have a seal because it doesn't need one. The impeller against the cup is a crude seal. But of course, some water escapes out the drive shaft hole. That escaped water acts as a SEAL to keep air from being sucked into the pump through the hole. Further up, you will find some large holes that the escaped water runs out of.

F_R,
I was hoping you would chime in on this. Yes, I was worried about exhaust gases being sucked in and circulated through the engine. Your explanation makes sense. Thanks.
