I rewiried my trailer and everything works except the running lights. My truck is a 2001 Chevy S-10 Xtreme. The light kit for the truck simply plug in the factory conection, and hade one white ground wire, which i grounded the the suspension. I used steel-wool on the trailer where the ground wire attaches to it. i'm stumped.

Which suspension-car or trailer? The suspension could very well be insulated from the trailer frame by rubber bushings!

i ground the harness on the truck to the suspension. is that a bad place for a ground? should i use on of the grounds from the factory?

Yes, that is not a good place. I would suggest the frame or a factory ground.

Make sure then when you installed your side marker lights that you screw you used to mount them to the trailer makes contact with the metal in the inside of side marker lights. They need a ground.

Re: No Running lights

I solved my running light problem like this....on a new style chevy s-10 i BOUGHT THE HARNESS KIT, I took the ground connector and stuck it under my hitch ball before torquing it down , now the ball is a solid ground, and I didnt even have to drill holes in my leased chevy !

Re: No Running lights

old subject, but what the hey....

I grounded my truck side of the wiring to the inside of the bumper (which is all metal) and the trailer side is connected to a bolt near the tongue. Am I okay with this? Only thing wierd was that the lights didn't really seem to work correctly until I put the trailer on the hitch ball... Is that normal?

Re: No Running lights

yeah that is normal - when you have a grounding problem. apparently one of your ground wires aren't making a good contact with the frame of vehicle/trailer, and rely on the hitch coupling to improve it. :)
