How hard is to fix reverse on my 76' 115ho evinrude? I lost it last year in the middle of the summer and never fix it. I never have to use so it never bother me to fix it. But I was curious on how hard it would be to fix.

Re: no reverse....

Hey 76....When was the last time you checked the gear lube? Reason I'm asking is that the shift mechanism is a pump in the front end of the gear case. Shifting redirects the gear lube to one side or the other of a small piston that slides back and forth to shift gears. It's a simple effective system but clean lube is a must. Its' possible that the piston is stuck and won't go to the reverse possition.

It's not a difficult job to check the pump but requires the removal of the lower unit and disassembly of the gear case. A good service manual would show you how it's done.

Re: no reverse....

I'll take a look at it today or tom. See what happened wass last summer real late at night I was driving back to the dock when all of a sudden this guy in the boat turned his light on. well the I was so close to him that the only thing I could do was jam it into revers and turn the wheel to avoid hitting him. I went from 40 to 0 in 2 seconds. Never the less I didn't hit hmi mised him by about 10 feet. He said he was having trouble with his battery and is real sorry. well when I got into the dock I go to put it in reverse to slow down a little and it just makes a clicking noise. Well like I said I never really use it because It just stays on the lake all summer. But it would be nice to have just in case. Is there any chance I just broke something in there when I put into reverse or did something just pop out of place because of the sudden force?

Re: no reverse....

76...looking at a parts break down, there are several possibilites. In front of the gear case where the shift rod goes in, there is a shift assist cylinder. This took the place of the electric solenoids to help shift the gear case. It's like a hydraulic piston assembley with a valve and plunger. Certainly a possibility for jamming here. The pump itself is full of small valves simply made up of samll balls and springs. Maybe one blew out.

If you don't have one, an OEM manual would be really great for a tear down of ths gear case. If you don't have one, check the links below. Really, this is a must for you right now or your gonna get lost taking this thing apart.

http://ww3.kencook.com/evinrudejohnsonmanuals/

http://www.marineengine.com/manuals/johnson/

Keep us posted as to your progress.
