Re: ...No Reverse

All the gears are in the lower unit.Post a MODEL number of the engine. Does the gearshift lever feel loose, did you take a "screw" out of the lower unit to drain the oil?
Backfire ;)

Re: ...No Reverse

Engine model no.

Model: J6SL C08
Serial: 100175

Johnson Sail Master 6hp -- was told ..an 1985.

Tranny lever feels as it always did, doesnt feel loose..and when tested in the bucket- appears to go into reverse, judging by water turbulence. Altho I cant tell but appears that reverse doesnt work because increase in throttle doesnt increase water turbulence.

All this is based upon the fact- reverse didnt seem to pull the boat...backwards when motor was mounted on the boat AND....incident last summer...
Buddy of mine on the boat, JAMMED motor in reverse while throttled up..loud clanking followed by engine killing.
Reverse never quite seemed to work right after that- go figure.
Now..im left to troubleshoot...

Thanks for all your advice so far!!

Jason

Re: ...No Reverse

I would take the gearcase apart, and look for problem, With a manual, these are simple little units to repair. A loud clank is never a good sign.

Jason,

You are aware that you can only get about half throttle in reverse, aren't you?

Re: ...No Reverse

is this engine fitted on some sort of sail boat and the propellor is not clearing the bottom of the transom? That would just push water against the boat, no reverse at all.
