no reverse

I have a 1975 70 hp evinrude outboard with a lower unit problem. After changing the lower unit oil I have lost reverse gear. The motor will shift into forward and back into neutral, but it won't go into reverse. What could of happened? Any ideas? Thanks for any help.

Did you fill from the bottom hole until it came out the top hole? Also, long shot, but have you tried to take the shift cable off the linkage and try to shift it manually at the motor?

Actully I took the lower unit off the motor and tried to shift it manually with no success. And yes it is full of oil.

Have you tried spinning the propeller while engaging the reverse position on the shifter? If the clutch dog and gear cogs aren't aligned properly when shifting, it'll lock up. You should ALWAYS have someone spin the propshaft when shifting with the motor not running...<br />- Scott

I think that '75 is a Hydro Electric Shift. Did you use type "c" l/u oil? <br /><br />c/6<br />Hooty
