no reverse

I have a 1989 mercruiser 4.3 litre LX Alpha One. Drive serial # OC583705 Transom serial # OC634735. The boat runs fine in forward, (got hot once) but the motor dies when going into reverse. I can engage slowly and the prop will turn, but when it gets to getting gas, the motor dies. Any suggestions for a fix will help.

You should repost in the I/O forum. There is a shift interrupt switch on a lot of models. If the shift cable binds the shift interrupt switch can stall the motor.

I had water get into m lower shift cable. Reverse was not possible, due to corrosion. The shift interrupt would kill the motor, in reverse.
