no reverse

I have a 1975 Viking deck boat I'm trying to restore. Model 990226A1 with an 140 hp OMC selec-trim, sterndrive. After rebuilding nearly everything on this boat over the last 5 months, I am very close to getting her wet for the first time. She goes into forward and neutral but not reverse. I have power to both shift wires at the transom breaking point so I assume the problem is in the outdrive. I haven't taken it apart yet but assuming the wires are intact, any ideas what the problem is?

Re: no reverse

If you're energizing both shift wires (properly - one at a time, of course), then likely your lower unit has a problem in the coils. Before ya' go bustin' into that, I think (can't remember without lookin') you need a special tool to work on that lower. Got a manual handy?

You have 12v going to the reverse cable, right? You also need to check resistance to your coils and make sure you're getting between 4 & 8 ohms (credit: Howard Sterndrive). You have a manual, yes?

Welcome aboard.

Re: no reverse

Yes, I do have a seloc manual and it is getting quite raggedy! OK, my cheap harbor freight multimeter turns out unreliable as it showed 4.5 Ohms with the leads touching instead of 1 as I have read is supposed to be. I went out and got a $20 meter and tested both wires to the outdrive(black to ground and red to each of the shift wires, meter set on the lowest resistance setting of 200 Ohms) and both wires show 5.7 Ohms!! Does this make any sense? 12.8V on each wire coming from the shifter and proper resistance from each wire from the outdrive yet no reverse! What else could it be?

The shift spring probably broke, I had one go out on my forward gear.

the good news for you is that the Reverse spring and magnet are located in the rear of the lower , so its much easier to access than the forward gear, its the forward gear that you need a special tool to get to , becasue you have to remove the vertical shaft.

its not terribly difficult to get the reverse out, just read through the steps in your Seloc.

the spring will probably run you 150$ ish. its part number 313455

Re: no reverse

Kick ***!! The boat came with an extra non-working outdrive so-I already have the part-and I can learn how to take it apart on the extra one! Great news! Thanks you both!! Drewmaster

Re: no reverse

As it turns out the spring was not broken but instead it wasn't attached to the reverse gear with the 3 little set screws! Works fine now! Thanks REDRIG!!! Drewmaster
