No reverse

I have a Mercruiser 4.3 with an Alpha 1 outdrive. The control lever is a quicksilver. My problem is that it will not go into reverse. I have had the lower unit off once to replace the water pump and all cables seem to move freely with engine on or off. This boat has been regularly maintained. Please help. BTW, I have searched prior posts and no one has talked about this topic. Does anyone have an answer?

No, and it didn't occur until about five trips to the lake.

Does it sound like it wants to go into gear? [grind] or nothing? My guess is the lower shift cable is either out of adjustment [doubtful] or going bad. You could pull the drive & test by hand to see if you have reverse. If you do , then it's the cable.If you don't well...Not good

It doesn't want to go into reverse. It will go into neutral and forward. While in neutral, pushing the center button, if I rev it in reverse, it will move slowly in reverse. I hope that makes sense.
