Hi All, We have a late model Evinrude 15 hp with remote controlls on our pontoon boat that will not go in reverse The controlls seem to operate OK but no reverse. Any suggestions please.
Thank You in advance.

Re: No Reverse

If you can get your barge out of the lake, I'd check and see if it'd shift into reverse by shifting it manually at the side of the motor. Also, looking to see how far the controls are moving the shifter when going into reverse. It could be your control cables are just out of adjustment.

Re: No Reverse

Welcome to iboats. what is the model # on the motor? as jb said, could be misadjustment, it also could be a cable going bad. if the cables are old they will pull well (forward) but if the interior or the exterior of the cable is going bad, they will not push (reverse) far enough to shift the motor.

Re: No Reverse

Hi , Thanks for the help. It has Been too cold or raining here in florida to go back down and check the cables. Also the catch that holds the motor down will not releace to tilt it up. Ant ideas there would help also.

Re: No Reverse

Don't know if yours has it but on my motor there is a tab just under the engine on the left side that flips forward or back, one way locks the motor down and the other lets it swing up.

Re: No Reverse

Hi again. We got a chance to have a look today and the linkage seems to work OK but it just seems to not to have enough travel to shift properly. I adjusted the cable where it mounts on the engine. I moved it 4 turns and it went in reverse ok but then would not go in foreward . I put it back and now it does shift in and out of both gears but not allways. It just seems to need more overall travel in both foreward and reverse .
Any Ideas ?

Re: No Reverse

If you are doing this without the engine running, the clutch dog may be hanging up on the edge of the keys in the reverse gear. Try moving the prop a little as you move the shift handle into reverse.

I'm not discounting the idea that something might be wrong, but it is also possible that its just fine. If it is possible for you to run the motor in a barrel, that would be a good way to check the motor.
