No Reverse?

I have a 1978 75hp (75ELR78C). I just bought it and had to rebuild the power head. It runs great now, but all the adjustments in the world keep me from getting both forward and reverse. When I run it with muffs it seems to work, it ?ratchets? going into either gear but it does go. I went out to the lake last night and still could not get it to go in reverse. Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks

Re: No Reverse?

"ratchets going into either gear" - you mean working the control stick back & forth? do you hear the gears grinding when you do this?

If you disconnect the shift lever from the linkage (starboard side) will go into gear?

Are you sure the gearbox is in neutral when the control box is in neutral?

Do you have the factory shop manual?

Re: No Reverse?

The unit is defiantly in neutral, and when you pull the controller back you can feel and hear the gears grinding. When I disconnect the shift cable I can pop it in gear just fine at the motor. It seems that the shift leaver under the intake/crankcase has more travel than the cable can push or pull it. I went through the steps in the manual to make adjustments but it did not get me very far.
The previous owner told me that the cables and control box were recently replaced, and look to be in good condition.
Thank you all for your help, this one has me stumped.

Re: No Reverse?

If it shifts fine at the engine, then it can only be in the control or cables. Disconnect the shift cable at the engine and have someone operate the remote control while you watch and see what the cable end is doing. Make sure the cable housing is secure in the mount where it enters the engine compartment. I still lean toward a stretched cable, even if it was supposedly replaced...
