No reverse

Quite proud of myself for changing the gear shift lever in Nissan 5hp, but after putting everything back together it shifts nicely into forward but won't shift into reverse. Is it possible it's not supposed to shift into reverse unless the motor's running? Please help. Alternative is taking everything apart again.<br />Thanks

Mac,<br /><br />Slowly pull the starter cord and try to shift it again.
