No reverse on 93 40 mariner tiller

No reverse gear when I shift to reverse. I get a grinding sound, and the prop turns at idle, but when I throttle it up, I get the grind.

Any ideas?

This engine has been great since new, and doesn't owe me anything. Runs like a top, so I want to repair it. Its used primarily for duck hunting, so she takes a beating.

Thanks!

Do you have the s/n of the engine and have you drained the LU oil to see how much metal it has in it?

Yep, lower unit was clean. I had all the seals done on it in the spring of '13, ran it that summer, changed the oil in the fall, and lost reverse in Nov. Drained the L/U again and still clean. It sat full of fresh clean oil all winter. I can almost get through the snow to get it out now, so I have the itch going to get it repaired before the ice comes off the lakes here.

That s/n comes up as:

40 ML 6E9-355081 - 6E9-358040 1991

From here:

Mariner 40-55 hp, produktions?rslista, modellguide

Parts List:

40 HP MARINER - Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. Parts Lookup

Here is a link to the condensed version of the Clymer manual. Download it soonest to your computer as the link is short lived.

If there is no metal in the oil, it may be time to drop the LU and see how the unit shifts by hand and that it does engage reverse. Is this a remote control setup or tiller?

Thanks for the info. Its a tiller.

I will probably take it to someone who knows what they're looking at though. I still don't know what the problem could be.....any suggestions where to start?

Re: No reverse on 93 40 mariner tiller

Before making any adjustments to the shift rod, I would drop the LU and see how it shifts by hand. If it will shift into forward, neutral and reverse, then I would re-install the LU and make an adjustment to the shift rod to ensure reverse is engaging positively. This is something you can do if you have some basic tools but if you feel uncomfortable, then take it to someone. If reverse was still a problem when the LU is off, it will probably mean entering the bearing carrier to see how rounded off the clutch dogs are.

Aside from the fact that there did not appear to be any metal in the LU oil, was there any very fine paste like material?

Nope, oil was clean as a whistle.
