It's finally warm on the lakes here in VT & we took the boat out for the first test run today. I had the drive apart for a new water pump and bellows along with some new seals over the winter

I quiclkly found that reverse was not working. The shift interupt swith was getting activited. Everything else worked very well for forward and nuetral with no shift interupt problems.

At first I suspected the shift cable but then I noticed that the prop spins freely when the throttle is in the reverse position on the trailer. This make me suspect that I may have assembled something wrong.

I recall vewrifiying forward & reverse work when the out dive was off for service.

Could I have the shift shaft 180 degrees out or other ???

Any thoughts are appreciated.

I pulled the drive and found that the plastic end of shift cable that protrudes beyond the nut is broken and was lodged into the hole in shift braket on the end of the cable. This was limiting the travel.

Anyone know how cirtical the plastic end is. I am tempted to see if it shifts without it.

Thanks for reading.

Ayuh,.... Ya mean the plastic sleeve that supports the wire cable,..?? Ya, it's Super Duper Critical....

You used to need a Super long socket to change the cables Because of that sleeve...
The Newest replacement cables have that little piece Threaded into the brass cable housing....

Good advice -- Thanks!!!

Needless to say-- Its better off to fix it correctly.

I will see if the sleeve is replacable as the shift cable is only a few years old. ( It was a sierra brand as I recall)

If the sleeve is fixed // In may even pry open the old wallet & spring for the Mercruiser cable this time.

I checked the drive in forward & nuetral for proper shiffting after final asssembly on the boat-- needless to say reverse will get added to the checks next time.

Re: No reverse after servicing alpha one 5.0 merc

Getting a little confused on Merc part #s and descriptions. Can anyone help to verify this p/n # 865436A03 is correct for 1988 alpha one with 5.0 litre shift cable kit ? ( or advise on best method )

865436A03

Tag on engine plate near the starter is hard to access but I think it reads 0327322 -- These number don't seem to come up in the plug in at

I went ahead and ordered the part as it seems these were all the same per the merc stuff website. As I try to take the step up to merc parts from aftermarket I find matching the parts is a challenge. Any advice is appreciated.
