I have a commander 302, it runs great when I'm sitting in the slip at idle the problem comes when I put it in gear it always stalls out. I've seen others have had this issue but it seems that no one has posted a solid resolution. I will check the voltage on the coil when I get to the boat tomorrow after work. There's a brand new carb on it and the fuel system is fine. All the wiring appears to be right but I'll double check everything tomorrow. I haven't check the distributor ever is that something I need to check. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

There is no one specific reason for your, it could be any number of things, without knowing more about your engine and drive it could be anything from timing, carb issue, engine in poor shape, plug wires on wrong, etc. etc. Depending on drive you could even have a shift cable problem.

Being Commander never made it into the sterndrive business, then the 302 is coupled to a velvet drive transmission and probably a 1 to 1 ratio. If the ignition hasn't been changed out over the years then you still have points and condensor. Sometimes weak spark will do as you describe. Enough fire to idle but when you give it the throttle, it drowns out the sparkplugs. You said the fuel system is fine but have you check the fuel pressure to the carb? I once had a 318 Chrysler drive me crazy doing the same thing before I discovered it was too weak of spark. Would run perfect at idle but would stall out the minute you gave it any gas.
