No power to wiring harness?!

Hey guys -

I rewired my trailer a few weeks ago, tested everything and it all worked fine. However, today I took out the boat and the lights weren't working, any of them. I checked the connector and the lights on the harness weren't on. What could have happened between now and then that the harness isn't getting any power?

I have a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox..

Thanks!

Since nothing is working, I'd check all of the fuses. You may have multiple fuse panels so make sure to really read your owner's manual. Also try tracing the wiring from the harness back towards the front of the vehicle. You might find that a wire pulled out of a connection, got cut, etc.... If all those don't find the problem then start looking for grounding issues.

Welcome to iboats!

Do you have a factory harness, an aftermarket plug-in harness, or an aftermarket harness that uses Scotchlok connectors?

If nothing works, I'd check the trailer to truck ground connection.

Thanks for the input guys. It's an aftermarket harness, not Scotchlock though. Any idea what fuse I should check?

Re: No power to wiring harness?!

ok not being overly familiar with that specific year you should probably look at your owners manual but you can have one or both so I will give you the whole deal for possible locations, if you have a power distribution center under the hood thats going to be where it is and where I would check first but if you don't then either near the drivers side kick panel(to the left of where your feet are) or above where your feet are, or the passenger side kick panel, If you don't have an owners manual then I would call your dealer.

Sorry I have more info at work not at home but I hope this helps

A lot of the newer vehicles have a fuse just for the trailer lights.

You've got turn signal and parking lamp fuses in the passenger side fuse box. You've also got one in the engine fuse box for the accessory power outlet #1 and accessory power outlet #2/cargo outlet. I don't this is the fuse but it's another to check. You've also got a fuse for the back-up lamps in there as well. Pages 5-80 through 5-83 tell you everything that you need to know. If all else fails, check any fuse that might somehow be connected to your towing.

Also you need to check the aftermarket harness. Mine had a controller module to drive the trailer lights from the factory harness feeding the rear vehicle lights. One day no lights on the trailer and all the vehicle fuses were fine... which left that little black box tucked up out of the way with double sided tape. $36 later and my lights were good again.
