three thoughts. first is that your shift linkage needs to be adjusted (under the shift linkage cover on the outdrive). the second is that the shift linkage control is bad and not moving the shift cable in reverse. last is that your cone clutch is bad (probably due to mis-adjustment of the shift linkage)

I am suspecting cone clutch also however I think it is called a sliding sleeve in the parts blow up. dont think drive is kicking up. I have power onto sand bar many times with drive part way up with no issues and now it wont do it. going to check caable adjustment first, however dont want to f-up forward ad it is wotking great. where is the best place to obtain a cone clutch assy for a aq 290a dp set up.. what else will I need to do the job? or am I better off getting a new upper housing???

how's the fluid? I would bet you have cable problems, cables rot and work better in one direction than the other sometimes. If it's not the cable, opening that drive will be opening a can of worms... If you don't have a service manual for it, get it. There's a lot of precise specs, shimming and torques you'll need to have.

download the manual for free here http://www.volvopenta.com/VOLVOPENTA...ical_data.aspx

order your parts here http://www.volvopentastore.com/

a new upper housing is about $5500 a new complete outdrive is about $12000. parts to rebuild it for a cone clutch about $400.

however before you go throwing parts at your drive, I suggest you diagnose the problem.

start by pulling the shift cover
put the drive in neutral
look at the shift assembly, the actuation bar on the upper should be horizontal.
put the drive in fwd, note the position
put it in rev, note the position.
if the bar did not move the same amount, then you have a shifter adjusment/cable/binical issue to adress.

thanks for the advise and links scott. that was going to be my next step.however unless something went out of wack in the cable since last week my guess is cone clutch because everything was working perform up until 2 weeks ago. started to notice it after being out on the water all day but thought it was just me being critical.

if your drive oil is low, it will be hard to get out of gear.
