I have a 71 Merc 9.8hp model 110. It seems to run fine in neutral, but in gear there is no power. Both cylinders are firing.
I'm thinking it could be the timing is retarded, but would it not run rough then in neutral? Also told it could be bad coils, but then again it runs strong in neutral.
The back story is that it was running fine, but I replaced an ignition wire due to a bad ground. Now no power in gear. Not sure if I may have inadvertantly adjusted something like the timing (not sure how that would have happened) or due to removal of some wires there is a spark to ground. I do hear some snapping at times and told that could be spark leaking to ground. Wondering why this might only happen when in gear?
