Long story, I'll cut short. 1989 28 HP 2 stroke. Bought lower unit and put on my motor. Guy put new impeller in, I checked. Very little pee. Shut down due to too hot. Remove impeller, inspect, it's taller than housing. Drive shaft won't turn with out players. Take impeller out, put on belt sander, remove enough rubber so not drive shaft turns freely. Still little pee, then no pee, then little pee etc. What's wrong? One er should have to grind rubber off, do I have the right housing? Put new thermostat in. These are a ***** to get tube in right. Desperately need help before I cut my losses and drop this in a creek

Water pumps are kind of important. I would recommend a complete water pump kit with impeller, gaskets and housing.

Sanding the impeller down probably doesn't give your the fine tolerance fit that is called for.

With the impeller installed it will be harder to turn the shaft.----So get the factory impeller.----Never an issue with those.----The tube must be put into the exhaust housing first.--------Then you install the lower unit.------Making sure the tube goes into the pump.----Easy , nothing to it.

Fresh or salt water used for how long motor ? If after installing a new OEM water pump kit the motor is still with peeing issues poke in/out the peeing port the plastic cannula found in carb cleaners, WD-40 cans, weed wacker strings with motor On. If with 0 avail, remove thermostat, bolt lid back on, flush the motor ON with muffs while geared froward at fast idle speed for as long as you want to.

If both cleaning methods doesn't work that motor has excessive crap, salt layer formations on the entire water passages. Solution : Tear down all water passages covers and manually scrape them impeccable clean or use a descaler product being flushed thru the etire water cooling system for some time, not that long though....

This motor has got me ready to tear my hair out. I removed new thermostat, no change, thoroughly cleaned all water passages. New omc complete water pump, gaskets. I am 1000 percent sure tube is in correct location. Still intermittent pee stream. Never a solid continues stream. I don't know what else to say. Thanks for all imput, I'm getting ready to cut my losses and move on

If you can afford a new motor than perhaps toss this junk one in my yard.-----Water must be 6" to 8 " above the impeller in a test bucket.----Hard to believe someone would install the wrong impeller.------Hard to believe someone would use a belt sander on an impeller.-------Looked at a overheated ( paint discolored ) 1974 model 40 HP Johnson yesterday.----No doubt former owners failed to install a new impeller is this low hour motor! Picked it up about 4 years ago for $100 ca for parts.-----Cylinder walls are not scored.----Going to take it apart and maybe change piston rings.-----The 11 year old grandson and family will enjoy it.-----New 40 HP Yamaha is listed at around $8000 which is way out of their fun budget.

to pee it must drink....
have you inspected the water passage way leading into the pump ?
have you taken the pump body apart and looked under it to allow easy entry of water ?

have you tried looking up the water tube with a small fiber optic camera to check for any kind of obstruction ?
if you send water up the water tube with a hose does water flow seem blocked or does the pee stream becomes OK ?
if you submerge just he LU in a bucket and sprin the drive shaft does water gush out of the water pump reasonnably ?

salty or fresh water engine you did not say !

Sate the method used to have thoroughly cleaned all water passages ? Last chance : Unbolt the lower leg, remove thermo and bolt cap on, insert a hose with adequate diameter to fit tight on to the lower water pick-up tube. Open fully the water faucet and flush the motor for as long as you want. If motor still doesn't pee right those water passages have not been impeccable cleaned to perfection specially if it's a salt water use motor...

You need a new impeller sanding it down destroyed it. Have you tried to unplug the pee hole? Maybe as simple as it is plugged up.

I put a complete new water pump in along with a new thermostat. The passage ways are open. The copper tube is in the correct place. When I run the motor it pees then stops then pees then stops then pees keeps doing this, is it not supposed to pee continually or does this Johnson pees then stops then pees. I never had a motor that did not pee continually. Can someone help? Thanks

I ask again?
Are you running in a barrel or on muffs?
If in a barrel how far above the pick up screen is your water level?
These pumps are not self priming. The water needs to be 6 to 8 inches above the screen. When it stop peeing you could be getting air instead of water.
