On my 1969 9.5 evinrude. Replaced water pump/impeller. Impeller pin in place. Water sprays out in a mist, not a steady stream and is hot. Fumes also come out of the pee hole. Water flows out of head with thermostat removed. Thinking I may have a clogged exhaust housing?

Re: No pee from the pee hole

Sounds like you have a few problems; #1 Over heating, try flushing motor and cleaning out exaust. And #2 I think you are right blocked exaust. Is this motor used for trolling if so the cold water does not let the motor get hot so the thermostat is closed. I knew a fellow that trashed a new trolling motor on the Lake Mich.(Cold Water) Motor never got warm loaded up and carboned up tight!
Good Luck Red!!

When you placed the impeller in the housing and tightened the screws did you turn the drive shaft so the impeller will not be stuck in the housing but is able to turn freely?

Yes, I rotated the driveshaft clockwise while seating and tightning the housing and screws. I also noticed that the gasket between the powerhead and exhaust housing has been leaking. Yes, motor used a lot for trolling. Should I leave the thermostat out? Thank you for the replies and I look forward to more.

Re: No pee from the pee hole

Your motor sounds normal to me. Evinrude motor did not have a PEE hole until the 1980's. The water that comes out the back is after the thermostat opens and should be hot. If water is coming out before it gets hot you have debree in thermostat or it is stuck open. Does the motor over heat??? Thermostate should open at around 160 degrees. You can check temp with a cryon type stick that is made to melt at a sertion temp. OMC dealers did sell it but not sure what they have now. Good luck and let us know what you find but I think your motor is OK.

Re: No pee from the pee hole

When I first fired the motor after rplacing impeller, no water came out of back of motor for probably 30 seconds or so. When the water does come out, it is very hot and sprays out. I would think it should exit in a steady stream. I removed the thermostat and cleaned it. It seemed to be OK. I know it was running hot from reading the plugs the last time I had it out, very lean and detonation too. Thanks!

It's not a big deal to take off the head and check for obstructions in the water passages, although you may not need to do that unless you are sure the motor is really running hot. Can you hold your fingers on the head for any length of time while the motor is running at temperature? Don't burn yourself, but you should be able to touch the back of the head between the plugs and the top of the head for a few seconds without having to pull your hand away -- actually, longer than that, but we're only talking rule-of-thumb here (no pun intended). If there is leakage under the wearplate or under the impeller housing, the pump will not work properly (or not at all). It sounds like you are getting flow to the powerhead, though. There is quite a range of discharge from a mist to a flood -- a mist is probably too little, but it's not likely you will see a steady stream either. Your hand should get pretty wet back there, and the water should not be so hot that you scald yourself.

If you end up pulling the lower unit again, you can try pumping water up through the water tube and see if the flow is restricted (will need to remove the thermostat to test). That can also break a blockage and clear water passages. Actually, you can do the same trick with the exhaust housing without taking anything apart -- can help if there is an obstruction in the housing.
