Hi there. Just joined to the site. I just purchased a 1985 charger figure 185v with a 85 225 mercury black Max. Took it to the river today to give it a test and it's not peeing. However there IS air puffing from the pee hole. Impeller was changed two years ago so that is definitely on my list of to dos anyway but it doesn't seem like it's pull water but pulling air? Anybody know What might be going on. Gonna pull the L.U. in a couple days to inspect the impeller bit wanted to see if you guys had ever seen this happen. Thanks for any and all help.

JAN....first thing is they only built a 225 in first generation block '80/'81 till tha ProMax and 3.0 motors came about so if it was sold to you as such its either older than represented or a 200...this should be a red flag on seller knowledge of what he actually has.....this is only in reference ta "Stateside" motors...

install a complete OEM water pump "kit" then go from there........jmo

You mention it was puffing air and not water, did it show signs of overheating? As said, it sounds like the impeller is shot, but I am curious if it was hot? I would suspect it would heat up pretty quick without water going through it and you would notice it right away.

Yes it was about to overheat. I don't think it caused any damage but the buzzer went off after about 12 seconds of running it

If your water dump line off the thermostats is tied into the line that cools your tuner ( rubber hose going to the mid section a the back of the motor ) and your thermostat doesnt open you can have exhaust gas pushing back through the hose and out the pee hole. I'd check the thermostats . Check and make sure you dont have OMC style thermostats in place. Sierra markets them as being Mercury replacements and they do fit the hole but they NEVER open and flow the right way and you'll get exhaust gas will back flow into the pee hole even with good water pressure and you will overheat due to the lack of water flow through the thermostats .Pull the thermostats out to test but make sure you put real Mercury thermostats back in place befor eyou run it much or you wont get up to operating temp and that will make the motor run like crap and wear faster.

Well Thanks to you I found my problem! However I also found about 3 other problems to boot. Took both thermostats out and viola, I have a peeing motor. However there is 2 hoses leaking. And both gaskets around the plates that surround the spark plug are leaking. I managed to find the gaskets online But can't seem to find the OEM thermostats. Anybody know where I could by these. My serial number is 5976403 whicheck confirms if IS a 1980-81 2.4L 225. Thanks so much for helping me troubleshoot all you guys. Y'all saved me a bunch of money for not having to put this in the shop!

Well a long time later I finally got the new thermostats gaskets and all new water hoses installed. And it STILL doesn't want to pee. Take the thermostats out and and pees. I am at an end of ideas and wanted to see if Anybody might know anything else that might be going on. It peed the first time I put them in but when I went to start it up today nothing. Is there something in the motor that could be leaking exhaust into the cooling system? I still have What seems like exhaust coming from the telltale

Well either it has to wait until the thermostat opens to pee after warming up, OR there is another water channel that is blocked. There are no other answers... JMHO!

I'm having a similar problem where my 2002 200hp 2.5l is not over heating but it's not peeing. I think it's the poppet valve, if it sticks open, the water will bypass the thermostats so to speak and thus the tail-tell. I ordered the kit to fix it but haven't had time yet. The next problem it could be would be a leaking gasket between the power head and the adapter plate.
