Just purchased a 92 sea ray with an alpha 1 motor. Started to replace the bellows and once I removed the outdrive I noticed that there was no oil line from the gimbal bearing to the outdrive. The hole is there and is corroded over. What does this mean? Boat runs fine and gear oil is full on outdrive.

This probably means that it was removed at some point . . . There would need to be something capping off the fittings on the bell housing and the transom plate though. . .

Do you have an oil reservoir in the engine compartment?

My 1993 Gen 2 outdrive had it capped off/disabled as well with no signs of any parts in the engine compartment of the oil reservior.

Thus I would probably guess that there were quite a few boats around 1992 to 1994 that did not install it.

That was the first few years that the Gen2 outdrives were out in the market. Don't know why boat manufacturers didn't want to put it in at that time.

I believe over time, around 1994/1995 and later the outdrive reservior became standard to install in all Gen 2 boats.
