hi, i have just bought my first boat a few months ago, and i know your going to hate me for this.... it has no lanyard. so is that ilegal or
something? or does it not matter because its really old and there was no lanyards back then. i don't see a problem in that so just give some opinions.

Re: no lanyard?

Somebody should come along with more info but you can wire in your own aftermarket kill switch and lanyard. There are a couple threads about it somewhere out there.

Re: no lanyard?

I'm running 520 hp with no lanyard but it's a 30'boat.... not all boats have em.... only things I've owned with them were jetski's and my 10' jetboat dad's bass boat has one...

as stated above, EASY retrofit to add one

but my boat is a tiny aluminum runabout. i think big boats
don't need them because its hard to fall of those things.

wow! thats cheap. im gonna get me one right away! thanks-:D

Good choice. You will have alot of piece of mind. I think the two best safety features around is the kill switch and the hot foot (personal opinion). Make sure your lanyard is at the correct length. you want it to engage before you can exit the boat. Congratulations on the new boat also :)

Re: no lanyard?

I know its kinda off subject james .. but why the " Im not gonna tell you " in your location ?

Sometimes its these kind of things that can help other members with your threads.

I mean .. if you said little lake NM or UT or something .. then no I dont think you need a kill switch.

If your located at the Cape of good hope or the Carib .. then thats a different story.

If this is your first boat .. take a boaters safety training coarse ( sorry I cant help on where to go because we dont know your location ).

Re: no lanyard?

Don't think it matters to much where your boating at all. A lanyard is a smart idea, especially on smaller boats. If you get thrown overboard, there is a chance of drowning, head injuries etc. Boats in general, atleast power boats will most times run in circles if someone is not at the helm. You can be run over by your own boat when this happens. And it has happened even on small lakes and rivers. I know here, there was a guy that got ejected. He was by himself. They found the boat going in circles. Not sure that they ever found him. Its pretty hard to get back into a boat that is moving.

Re: no lanyard?

I think anyone who uses a lanyard should test it from time to time.

They are a normally open switch that closes to shut the motor down but they spend their whole life in the open position & would be extremely prone to corrosion on the contacts which would cause them to fail when needed.

Re: no lanyard?

Set it up like a tractor, kill switch under seat, your butt goes up and motor goes off????

That would work great, right up to when ya gotta stand up and look! ;)
