no full speed

Ijust bought a 1974 M.F.G. Run about w/ 1968 Mercury 65hp, Idont know much about boats motors, the problem it was on the water when i bought it it started at the dock i drove it to the ramp while driving in the no wake zone i just wanted to goose it, and no pick up it would idle and go but no pick up speed, what could be the problem? thanks in advance for your infor.

Could be it needs a carb rebuild. Did it sit for a while before you got it? Check the compression first, before you go any further.

First chance you get, check compression, spark and fuel system from bottom of the tank up to the carbs. Keep posting on what you find.

Thanks guys, I'm going to put it in the shop, since i don't know much about this, by the way looking on my title the yr. says 1968, after looking it up it could be a 1967, reason being acording to ser. # mine is 2164811, am i correct? thanks again....<br />p.s. when i get it back, i'll tell you about what the problem was. thanks so much.
