No Forward gear GT 150 Johnson

I haven't been into boating but a few weeks now. I've heard a grinding when I shifted into forward in the past but toady it would not go into forward at all, just grind. Out of the water it will shift into forward. I'm thinking it's a gear going bad or gone bad. Any suggestions??????

Disconnect the shift cable and see if it goes into gear by hand and stays there (in the water). Lets hope the cable has stretched.
