So i was looking through this manual for my 88 mariner 75 hp. It shows a gray wire coming from the controls to the rectifier. Well this wire isn't hooked up. The diagram shows wires coming from rectifier to voltage regulator. I dont think this motor has a voltage regulator on it? Is this normal? Does the gray wire HAVE to be hooked up to the rectifier and then to a voltage regulator? This motor has no spark.
Any ideas thanks

Re: No Fire

Greg;

If you look in the Wiring Section 2D, page 11 of the manual you will see the grey wire is for the tachometer. Are you using a tachometer?

As well, 2D, pages 1 and 2 show diagrams for engines with and without a Low Oil Warning Module. If you do not have the warning module, you have the rectifier only, without a voltage regulator per page 2.

I don't know which drawing you are looking at with wires coming from the rectifier to a voltage regulator as the ones that use the voltage regulator have a built in rectifier. You may be confusing the terminal block (o) with a rectifier.

When you say you have no spark, do you mean none of the plugs are sparking?

Re: No Fire

I will be running a tach. I hooked it back up. And I saw all the different diagrams for warning and not. Mine is wired like 2d-2 into the rectifier but has the low oil module. Has two wires from oil tank, the purple, and tan going into the low oil module. The guy I got the motor from said he replaced the rectifier. idk if it had a voltage regulator and he decided it didnt need it or what he did. Will low oil kill the engine? If so I may be able to disconnect the purple wire. It just kinda confused me cause mine is wired exactly like 2d-2 but the oil module too. I dont have any spark at all. I will test the stator when I wake up this evening. I saw that if it doesnt have spark at all its usually the stator.

Low oil will definitely kill the engine if it gets low enough!

Do you know if the previous owner changed the stator? The stator on that engine should be a 16 amp and it should have a combined voltage regulator/rectifier. Do you know the p/n of the stator that is on there at the moment?

You say you are going to test the stator. Do you have a DVA adapter for the voltage tests? Let us know what figures you come up with.

Re: No Fire

I tested the stator and it was supposed to have 1100-1400 ohmns or something like that between the blue and red wire leads. I got nothing. So the stator has to be bad. The yellow wires tested out good and so did the red and ground test. The timing base tested out perfect too. The stator is stamped 398-8778A16 the factory one not the red one. It only has the rectifier. It doesnt have the voltage rectifier that mounts by the flywheel. I took the stator off now I just have to find one. Im pretty sure its the 9 amp system.

Greg

The one I need says obsolete. Im not exactly which one I need either.
I found this one not too sure it will work.

Re: No Fire

Anyone know if this stator will work? The motor is the only thing I will be running this battery on. My lights and trolling motor will be off two other batteries.

Greg;

Did you talk to CDI? I sent you the information on the 28th. Does your flywheel have the bolted in magnets or are they glued in?
