I have a 1976 johnson 85hp with no fire at all,
all coils and the power pack were replaced by
previous owner to try to fix problem. I was told
by him that it was the timer base so i replaced it
and still no fire at all my ohms readings for stator, timer base and all are right with the clymer manual. my stator is putting out 86 vac when cranking is that enough or should it be more i removed the kill circuit from the power pack and removed rectifier from circuit still no spark
i can't afford to replace any more parts without
knowing for sure what it is. THANK YOU

Scrappy.... Remove the s/plugs. Rig up some kind of spark tester whereas you can set a 7/16" gap. Disconnect the large main RED electrical plug at the engine.

Crank the engine by using a small jumper from the battery side of the starter solenoid to the energizing wire thats connected to one of the 3/8" nuts on that solenoid (not the ground wire).

If you now have spark, in all probability the ignition switch is shorted. Re-connect the RED plug and remove the black/yellow wire from the back of the ignition switch. Crank the engine again, and if you still have spark, replace the ignition switch.

Let us know what you find.

I just had that problem too on a 1976 johnson 70hp. Try changing your solinoid that is by the starter it's about 20-30 dollars. Also check battery cables at the connection, you just might need to cut off alittle bit of cable and re-crimp the ends. hope it works francisco.

Re: no fire at all

Joe Reeves question, please. I'm new to this fine forum and am having similiar problems with a 77 evinrude 85 HP. When Scrappydappy disconnected the brown and yyellow wire at terminal #1 on the Power pack, wasn't he 6testing for a defective switch Very much appreciate your answer.
