I have a 1984 70 hp Evenrude. For the past few weeks, when I would try to plane off my engine was sluggish, then would take off like normal. All day would be ok. Next day same thing in the morning, then would open up and run normal. This time was running normal then started running sluggish in the middle of the day. Checked compression on cylinder 1 (140 PSi) Clyinder 2 (135 PSI.) no compression on Cyl. 3. Could a busted head gasket cause this?

You must have posted this in another forum other than evinrude problems. so they move it to the proper place so it is easier to get help

I do not know if this is your problem, but yes i think a blown head gasket could cause compression loss on the cylinder.

Yes a busted headgasket could cause no compression - if it is, there will most likely be water introusion. Remove head and look at cylinder walls. Bad headgasket mostly lowers compression to 20 or so. A badly scored cylinder will often mean total loss of compression.

Lets hope its a head gasket. Pop the head off and let us know!

Good luck!

Re: No Compresson on lower cylinder

I bought a new gasket and will remove the head this afternoon. The comnpression went up 10-15 psi but went back to 0. Hopefully it is just a gasket, I have a fishing trip planned this weekend. Thanks for the info and help. I will post my findings in the morning.

Re: No Compresson on lower cylinder

Does anyone know what the torque requirements are for a 1984 70 hp head?

The compression went up and then down without removing the gage?
