What a delema, I have been running this 14' trihul for the whole summer and it has no capacity plate on it. At the begining of summer the coast guard auxilary was at the ramp doing safetey inspections and said that the boat did not need one because of its age. Yes its that old. Anyway I want to repower the boat but Im not sure how big I can safeley go with the power. All I know is its a 76 and the title says BMH under make and VS under body.I dont even know what kind of boat it is. Does anyone know what kind of boat this is or how big of a motor I can put on it?

It would appear to be made by Bay Marine Plastics. As far as capacity, there are a number of sites; search "determining boat capacity".

Re: NO Capacity plate

Since the company is no longer in business, and records were not maintained, it is impossible to determine the HP ratings, persons capacity, total weight capacity, or anything...and the CG knows this. So basically, you are about free to re-power with whatever you want to put on there. The caveats are your insurance (which shouldn't have a problem), but more importantly, the case where you might have an on water accident where excessive speed was the determining factor, and a LEA may claim that the engine was too large for the boat...

Hey, there are guys in Jersey that run 16' lap-strake skiffs with 350 I/Bs...just saying...

Re: NO Capacity plate

Wow thanks for the fast replys. Im just wondering because Im going to look at two motors tomorrow, ones a 35 and ones a 40 , both johnsons. It still wont be any kind of race boat or anything, ive seen 14 ft aluminum boats with 40 hp motors I just wanted to make sure it would be safe. I guess safetey is currently pending a test run.
