I have a standard 4 wire trailer and all the lights work fine until I tied in the amber side lights. When I connected the lights to the running lights, the lights turn off when the brakes are depressed. Does anyone have a reason for this and a way to fix it?

Thanks,
KindDutch

What type of vech. are you hooking up to.
Some of them have a split system on the vech.

Agree with Bondo that your problem is most likely a bad ground connection. If all your running lites (tail and side marker on both sides of trailer) go out when you hit the brakes (and brake lites go on), then your bad ground is prob'ly the connection of the white wire to the trailer frame at the tongue, or the the ground pin connection in the connector. If not all your running lites go out when you hit the brakes, and you can't figure it out then give us some specifics and maybe we all here can help. Good luck.

I bought a new wiring harness with lights, but it did not include side lights. I wired in the tail lights first and the tail lights, brake lights & turn signals worked great. When I tied in the new side lights (purchased seperatly)to the coresponding brown wire on each side, the side running lights work. Now when I depress the brake, the brake lights go off.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Kinddutch - In your initial post you say that "...the running lights, the lights turn off when the brakes are depressed." In your second post you say that "...when I depress the brake, the brake lights go off."

Which is it?

Is your problem that the running lights go off (become unlit) when you hit the brake pedal as you seem to be saying in your first post?

Or is it that the brake lights are lit all the time and go off (become unlit) when you hit the brake pedal as you seem to be saying in your second post?

Do all the lights use the trailer frame as the ground, meaning no light has a white wire coming out of it, just a stud that mounts the light to the frame?

Prob'ly many here would like to help you but need clear specifics to do so. What you did with the wiring and lights seems in general the normal thing to do, so the devil must be in the details as usual. Clearly tell us the details. :)
