Has anyone registered a NY trailer in NJ. The previous owner had it registered with the state of NY. I plan on buying it and registering it in NJ. Is there anything I should make sure I bring or be aware of ? Thanks.

In NY it will have a transferable registration and not a title if the trailer itself weighs under 999lbs, not GVWR. I live in NY and my boat trailer (double axle, 7000lb GVWR) does not have a title, (see this link http://dmv.ny.gov/org/registration/register-trailer)

that being said, in NY, if you are trying to register a trailer bought out of state, they will require a NOTARIZED bill of sale in addition to proof of owner ship (signed transferable registration or title).

Your best option, and the only one I would be going with, is to contact the issuing party. (e.g. The State of NJ DMV/RMV). Good luck arguing with them that you were advised by some anonymous person online that you only needed.........
