I have a 2008 Nissan 15 horse outboard, the last two times I took it out when I started up and let it idle the oil light went off, as I motored away from the launch 50 yards the oil light came on and the engine ran rough, I shut it off and started.it a minute later , the oil light went off and it ran fine , I ran it for another hour with out this happenig. Again, any idea what is happening and what inshould do.to.solve this situation, I dont want to ruin the motor. Thanks for any advice.

It must not be even a drop over full.
Oil pressure could be low if the motor is idling too slowly. That would turn on the oil LED. The poor running could be anything from bad gas to a fouled plug.

Is it running OK now? If you had a slug of bad gas (for example), causing poor running, then if the motor RPMs got too low, the oil LED might come on.

I had it out a month ago and it did the same thing, but ran good the rest of the day, filled up with new gas this weekend and was.surprised when it did the same thing, light goes out and ran good, but when motored away in a minute I noticed it running bad and oil light on, shut it off and started it again, and it ran fine. One thing that crossed.my mind is I have it tilted up on a transom saver while traveling ,could the oil not be settled enought to register as full and keep the light on untill it warms up some what?

The light is for low pressure. It should stabilize in a few seconds after starting.

Pull the oil pressure switch and check for metal fragments in it. Then put it back and try it again.

I pulled the oil pressure sensor, looked clean no sign of.metal or debris, taking it out for salmon saturday will try again ,might even drain a couple ounces of oil out to see if that makes a difference.thanks again for the advice.

Pnav, . I had it in the river the other day, after starting the motor it idled for about 15 seconds and the oil light went out, was running smoothly, I slowley motored.away from the dock I reverse to.the middle of the river, when I put it in forward it was running real rough and I noticed the oil light on again,so I shut the motor of and after about thirty seconds I started it again to see what would happen, oil light went off in ten seconds or less and I ran the motor for about five miles on the river and it ran perfect,going.to.try again saturday.

Sounds like you have a running issue, causing poor idle, giving low oil pressure. A chunk of crud in the carb could do that. Of course, almost anything could cause that poor running...

Well , it didn't cut out and run bad like last time, but it did seem to idle a little rough, should I pull the carb and rebuild/clean it or is there something I can spray down carb or put in gas that.might help clean the carb.

Check the plugs, to help you isolate whether you have a mixture issue. No known spray or magic elixir will clean the carb, though you can make it shiny by spraying it. If you have a defective/marginal oil switch, it could flicker even though you have good pressure. But the poor running is another thing. Most common issue with EPA-rated carbs is varnishing. That can only be really fixed by a complete disassembly, a soak in carb dip, a blow-out, and careful reassembly.

Thanks pvanv, ill look at the plugs even though they have been in the engine and only ran three times, probably find a shop and have the carb rebuilt.
