I bought a mid 90's? Nissan NS40D 3 cylinder 2 stroke outboard from a friend. He had it on his sailboat but upgraded to a bigger engine. The mechanic doing the swap removed all the cables, controls and the oil injection tank. (he cut all the cables so I will have to splice them all back together) Would somebody have some pictures of this engine showing where and how the various cables are attached and routed? I tried watching youtube videos of these engines but could find anything that would really show what i wanted to see. Also downloaded the parts catalog but the exploded views didn't really help me. How are the cables arranged where they enter the engine case, control cables, battery and steering?

On a sailboat? Must be a McGregor. That's the only sailboat I can think of that runs a motor that big.

At least you still have the mixing pump. Do you have the oil tank and the rest of the bits? The oil mixing system is very reliable on those motors, so removing it is pointless. It will use more oil, and foul plugs faster. What an uninformed dummy that guy was. The M40D2 was phased out in the early 2000s because of the introduction of the TLDI. There is a lot of info in the Factory service manual (available from any dealer, even me -- not online, as it is copyrighted). That aside, the control cables for a Remote model (P type) connect very straightforward. You also need an oil filter (looks a lot like the fuel filter, with a settling bowl). You also need to purge the oiling system, and then adjust the link rod to set the correct amount of oil going through the oil pump. There is a low oil sender in the oil tank that connects to the low oil alarm circuit.

You still have the R pins for the control cables, so connecting the RC box should be easy.

Thanks for the tips PVANV, yes it was on a McGregor he upgraded to a 90 E-Tec. I was able to find a owners manual and a service manual so hopefully i get this sorted out soon. I do have the oil filter and tank, hopefully no other pieces are missing. Also needed to take out the tilt tube, tried to get rid of the corrosion inside with a drill and steel brush but after about 30 minutes of drilling i gave up it is just too pitted in there.
yes i have the R pins but not the remote cable ends, are they interchangeable with other brands? We no longer have a Tohatsu dealer here. Have Evinrude, Yamaha, and Mercury dealer close by.

The clevis ends are standard for 10-32 threaded cables.
