hi, im new to iboat, so bear with me, i hope this is the right place to post this:confused:

i am looking forward of getting a 18HP nissan, but after contacting local dealer they said that nissan is coming with a new 20hp motor to replace the 18, and they should have them in soon. which is better for a 14foot alumanuim fishing boat???

i also hear that they break down often and high on maintance, TRUE or FALSE:confused::)

a 25hp will be better for you, it will only break down or be high maintenance if you do not look after it .....

thank you for the tip;):D

i will see and check the 25hp motor, since i have a boat that takes only short shaft motors:(....weight of a 25 might be more than a 20, it wont be to much for my boat???????

The 20 is 50 lbs lighter than the 25 and they have been out for months now. They never break down and you only change the oil once per year...Is this dealer of yours an idiot?

You'll have to be careful with the weight issue of a 25hp 4-stroke. Might be too much for your boat...an extra 60+ lbs. over the 18/20hp

As far as the 18hp vs 20hp...there are probably some really good deals on the 18hp as dealers reduce their inventory to make way for the newer 20hp. Check out some of the online guys like cabalas.com or internetoutboards.com (or just do a google search for nissan outboards and you'll see plenty of "sponsored links").

Since you're only talking a difference of 2hp it might make more sense to get the 18hp if your dealer is selling them out with a discount.

And no, they don't break down often. As long as you maintain it, it (and any other brand) will last a life time. Maintenance...on a 4-stroke there is more maintenance than the old carbureted 2-strokes (oil changes, valve adjustments, etc). But since you can't get carb 2-strokes any more you have no choice. And maintenance would be the same regardless of which brand.

I've had the 18hp for about 8 years now. Never been to the shop.
I do typical lube and spark plug maintenance, use good(plus) gas,
and fuel stabilizer/conditioner. Gets terrific mileage.
I have it on an 18' light jon boat, and it will do about 20mph.

18 or 20? If you might move up to a bigger and heavier boat, then
the 20 would have the slight edge. Otherwise, whatever works best
for you in the purchase. You won't go wrong with either.
