I am thinking of buying a Nissan 18hp from Cabela's. Has anyone done this and is it as good as it sounds. Hard to beat the price and shipping rates. Do these motors run right out of the box or do they need to be serviced by a dealer. From what I hear these are very good motors and very reliable.

Re: Nissan - Tohatsu 18hp

Well I just bought a 40 hp Tohatsu from my local dealer, I asked him if I should bring it in for a checkup or anything after a specific number of hours, he said just follow break in and run it.

He said if I felt more comfortable, bring the engine in after I mount it to the boat and he will start it up and do a general check.

So to answer your question, from what I can you just need to follow the break in guide and I think at 10 hours they recommend you change the lower unit oil, and they give you great directions on how to do that. Otherwise these motors seem to be pretty maintenance free (besides the givens).

To be more direct, you need to install a prop (at least I had to) which should be given to you. Otherwise these engines are ready to go.

99,
I bought a nissan from cabela's 2 years ago. Very pleased with the whole deal. Great price on the motor, free shipping and I used their EZ-Pay program for 6 months of interest free payments. A fairly decent owners manual came with it so you get all the recommended details for break in and such.
