Hello all,
I have an aluminum 1985 bayrunner westcoaster open-20’. There is a plate on the hull but I cannot read the specs. I’ve done a little research and think is rated up to 90hp (old 2-stroke weight) and was wondering if it could handle the 314 lb Nissan motor. If so, is it the best bang for your $. The e-tec sounds great but as the guru said Nissan has a solid reputation. Any suggestions would really be appreciated. I’m starting from scratch with this boat by the way, nothing but the hull right now.
Rich.

I've had a tldi 90 for three years now. It's been trouble free and gives excellent gas economy. You'll save at least $1k over the cost of an e-tec, but you will need a strong battery to keep the tldi happy. The e-tec can be pull started if the battery is dead. With the tldi, the tach also serves as the diagnostic function, whereas with the e-tec, you or a tech will need a laptop to use the diagnostics.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Tohatsu/Nissan.

Thanks,
I have driven Nissan's for years and have always been happy...Funny how brands can create loyalty.

P.S .what you think about the weight issue?

The weight won't be an issue on that boat. You will need a battery with a CCA of 1000. The TLDI, OptiBomb and HPDI drink amps to start the electrical system.

It will work...Sort of. The problem is that any degradation in wiring and battery life will drop it below what you need for the system to operate. Think of it like this:

If you buy a gallon of milk close to the expiration date you know you have less time before it goes bad. If your fridge is set a little high, the kids leave it out for 20 minutes one morning and it was a little warm the day you brought it home all that shortens it's usable life. Your battery is the same. The more CCA you start out with the more likely you are to have an extra year between necessary battery replacements.
