Just bought a used NSD40B #023697XE. according to Nissan it is a 2006. the seller fired it up and it ran perfect. I installed in on my bayrunner and it won't start. the engine was laid down on the port side in the back of my truck for an hour bringing it home. I installed new spark plugs(oem). new resistance cap on top plug. old one was corroded. tested the wire. inline spark tester shows spark on all cylinders. recommended marine battery 800CCA 12.8v reading. no warning buzzers. when I attempt to start it, a tiny bit of smoke comes. after several attempts, it has started to backfire. The ignition must be working, right? Not getting enough fuel? fresh fuel, primed til bulb is firm. i watched the fuel filter fill up. I have a Seloc manual but its a bit overwhelming. could laying it down have caused the issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Don't know, but when in need to lay down a 2 strokes engine better consume all fuel before doing so. Are plugs extremely wet ?

Happy Boating

Re: Nissan tldi 40 starting issues

It was manufactured in 2005.

Preferred battery will be 1000 cca; 1000 mca is acceptable in warm weather.

The Seloc manual is a doorstop, or in colder climes, tinder for the wood stove.

Either see your dealer, or get the Factory service manual, and put er in diag mode to see what the ECU has to say.

D/L your owners manual, and make sure you have primed the oil system.

I take it that the starter cranks, but the motor does not fire. Could be almost anything, but a good possibility is a poor wire connection w/r injectors.

The battery is 1000 mca and I'm in san diego. it should work. I agree on the seloc manual but the factory manuals are hard to find. I just ordered a used one on ebay. unfortunately a tachometer was not included in the sale. I'm in the process of shopping for one now which brings up another question. Which is the correct tach? parts catalog for 2006 says part#3Z5-72640-1. you said it's a 2005 which requires part#3T5-72640-0. nissan says part # 3GF726470M. I bet any one of these would work but I want to be sure.

Re: Nissan tldi 40 starting issues

Year of manufacture is irrelevant for servicing Tohatsu/Nissan outboards; Model/Serial is what you need for proper identification.

The Factory service manual is available from any dealer... including a few forum members... even me: 003N210502, SERVICE MANUAL NSD40B/50B TLDI, $40.00.

The 3T5-72640-0 is superceded to 3Z5726401M, 3Z5726401M is NLA. The new Tachometers are custom-made Faria units made for Tohatsu.

If you have the remote model, you would use 3GF726470M, TACHOMETER - TLDI "P" MODELS-BLACK or 3GL726470M, TACHOMETER - TLDI "P" MODELS- WHITE, $133.72

If you have a tiller model, you need either 3AC726400M, TACHOMETER - 2/4STR - BLACK or 3AD726400M, TACHOMETER - 2/4STR - WHITE, $92.31

Let me know if you need a hand.

You will have to reset the TPS sensor....Instructions can be found in the factory manual. It's possible they could be in the SELOC manual as well, but maybe not.

will do. I removed the sparks plugs and found cylinder #2 plug was dry. others were wet. Paul suggested a poor wire connection with injector. that looks like the #1 suspect now. I checked harness connection at injector. it looked good. tach and manual are in the mail to further diagnose the problems. thanks to everyone for the input. keep it coming

I reset tps and it produced a faster, consistent cranking but still won't fire.

Re: Nissan tldi 40 starting issues

Any error codes? What are the air rail and fuel rail pressures?

No tach yet, so i used a multimeter. No warning buzzer or warning light when ignition is on. In diagnostic mode oil lamp-off, water lamp-off, battery lamp-on. I can only get a voltage reading for the tach leads approximately 6 volts. I am guessing a mid range voltage equates to a mid range RPM. this data indicates a possible #2 or#3 air injector malfunction. Should I be cranking the motor for air/fuel rail pressure readings? I got nothing with the engine off.

Re: Nissan tldi 40 starting issues

Rail pressures should hold for a bit. As soon as you have the tach, you will be able to do a better dx.
