I can't believe it! Just got my my boat and motors back after two months of waiting for parts for my Nissan 40C. Mercury or Johnson for me after this!

Re: Nissan Parts

First it was a waterpump impellar. It finally came in and then it was discovered that I needed a part to lock it in reverse when backing up. I guess it would only have taken a month if both parts had been ordered at the same time. As I understand it, the supplier (in Texas) was out of stock and had to order from Japan!

Re: Nissan Parts

Art,

I can't think of anything that was out of stock. I know the impellers were in stock and it's only three days from Dallas to you. If you can tell me what the other part was I'll check and see if was really on backorder or if the dealer was lying. We get a lot of people that contact us because they have been unable to find a part and 99 times out of 100 the part was available, but their dealer never ordered it.

Bill:

Not quite the same problem. Mine didn't pop out of gear - it popped out of the water (kicked up). Two parts were required to fix it. Yours might be a simple adjustment. Check with Elvin:
http://www.InternetOutboards.com

Art B

Elvin:

Here is what the repair order lists (some of these were for my 5hp and were on hand):
368650212M Impellar, 369650211M Impeller,(2) 36965080M GSKT, 348650210 GSKT, 349663120M link, 346663231M Spring, 349663120M ARM. The last three items were, I think, related to the backup lock. I see that one part number is used twice which might be a recording error.

Art B

Re: Nissan Parts

Art,

Out of the first four numbers the only one that is real is the 2nd one. The 2nd set of numbers are real. Now here's the odd thing. None of those numbers were on backorder from Japan. If you want to have some fun with that local dealer who didn't order the parts in for you when they said they did...Just go into their dealership and ask to see the invoice or shipping ticket. I'll bet money that they didn't order in the parts. It's unfortunate that dealers do that, but it's much easier for them to lie and say the part is on backorder from Japan than to be honest and say they they didn't value you enough as a customer so they they didn't order it. :)

Re: Nissan Parts

So what is the solution? I haven't been able to find ANYONE within 50 miles that is even interested in working on a Nissan!

Re: Nissan Parts

Art,

First, there are seven dealers within 50 miles of you:

Company Nelson Marine
Address 23675 N. Hwy 99W
Newberg OR 97132
Phone 503-702-2660
Fax 503-537-0794
Distance Approx. 21 Miles

Company R & M Marine
Address 11225 SW Tualatin-Sherwood Rd.
Tualatin OR 97062
Phone 503-885-0912
Fax 503-885-8743
Distance Approx. 28 Miles

Company Southside Marine
Address 2660 SW 3rd St.
Corvallis OR 97333
Phone 541-753-4241
Fax 541-753-6201
Distance Approx. 36 Miles

Company Inflatable Boat Center, Inc.
Address 2041 S.E. Powell Blvd.
Portland OR 97202
Phone 503-235-2628
Fax 503-236-7723
Distance Approx. 38 Miles

Company Northwest Inflatable Boats (Elco Marine)
Address 2711 N. Hayden Island Dr.
Portland OR 97217
Phone 503-283-5510
Fax 503-283-5616
Distance Approx. 43 Miles

Company Channel Marine Services Inc.
Address 25500 N. W. St. Helens Rd
Portland OR 97231
Phone 503-543-2377
Fax 503-543-2177
Distance Approx. 44 Miles

Company Orsborn Power Saw Co.
Address 1734 SE Hwy 101
Lincoln City OR 97367
Phone 541-994-2620
Fax 541-994-3118
Distance Approx. 48 Miles

I'm sure one of those is your lying dealer so contact one of the other ones for any future needs.

Second, contact Tohatsu at 972-323-6003 and tell them about your problem. If you don't complain they can't fix the problem they don't know about. A bad experience like yours is 100% avoidable if the manufacturer is aware that they have a problem dealer.

Third, in the future let me know the minute something seems like it's taking to long. If it takes over a week to get a part someone is not doing their job. Backorders do occur though. On rare occasion Tohatsu USA can run out of a part that they didn't forecast that they would need and be out of it for a few weeks. Even when a part is not available under one number a compatable part may be available either in a kit, under a different paint color or from an alternate parts source.

Re: Nissan Parts

Thanks Elvin. Yes, one of those did the work (the closest).

Southside Marine in Corvallis wasn't interested.

I was working from a Nissan ad in a local Hunting & Fishing News. R & M Marine wasn't listed there.

Several that it does mention don't service Nissan and one that was listed in the ad screwed up the back-up lock. Most of these are a long ways away but, if I have to, I will call R & M next and see if they really like to work on Nissan.

I would sure like to get a reference from someone that had received Nissan service from one of these.

Re: Nissan Parts

I think by simply stating that the dealer didn't want to work on it....you should have seen red flags. You were screwed- let me guess: They sell a competitive brand as well...and probably make a better profit on it....now if they can inflict enough pain on you....maybe you will crack and buy something different...

I have had nothing but fantastic experiences in getting parts---including ordering an impeller kit for a 50 Nissan in the past few weeks.

Re: Nissan Parts

Art,

All of those listed are under contract to offer service. If you would be so kind as to forward a list to me of those who were not interested in honoring their agreement with Tohatsu I will be happy to have it....Handled.

Re: Nissan Parts

Elvin:

I have sent you a list of my findings. If I wasn't a mechanical disater (details on request) I might have tried to do the work myself but, as I recall, Nissan and many others require that you go through a dealer to get parts.

Art B

Re: Nissan Parts

Unfortunately it always depends on the dealers opetite...
As internetoutboards mentioned they do things that give them more money.
This is the reason why in other topics like "what motor should I buy" dealer and service are a significant factor and , believe me, no manufacturer wants a problem dealer.

Re: Nissan Parts

It's getting worse rather than better in the industry. It goes across brands and across geographic areas. In the 60's dealers were much more concerned about keeping their customers happy. Today there is some lip service to CSI, but dealerships with more than 5 or 6 employees are following automotive management practices and only fein an interest in customer satisfaction. Mom and Pop operations are still your best bet for customer service, but even they have lost that spark of caring. They can't compete at price with the big guys and it makes them bitter.

Z-Man...Uncle Guido is retired, Uncle Vespucio is...Missing and Cousin Knuckles has arthritis. My nephew Icepick still makes housecalls, but he's union now and it just costs too much to send him out of town. The Japanese use the Yakuza anyway...They blend in so well with the tats. :)
