I'm new to outboard motors, my first purchase was an older Nissan Outboard 4Hp four stroke, model number NIS NSD 4B 5B 6B. Runs like a champ, couldn't be happier. Only thing is it's obviously used but has been well taken care of. After running it and getting it home I notice a hole in the right side above the foot. It's a manufactured hole not a hole caused by damage. The parts catalog lists a grommet in the hole. Has any damage been done by running this motor without the grommet in place? I have attached photos

Your model number makes no sense. But... those size Tohatsu/Nissan motors have a grommet there to access the shift linkage. It will be loud with that missing.

Yep, and if the hole is submerged while combo is floating at neutral will have exhaust combustion popping from there as well..

Happy Boating
