Nissan oil filter, can I use one from a Merc?

I went to get an oil filter for my new 30 HP 4 stroke Nissan outboad and they didn't have one but my outboad dealer sold me one for a Merc. It is slightly shorter but it was the same diameter and screwed right on. Is this ok? I know a lot of mfg's have parts that cross over and I guess this is one? Is there a FRAM that will work for $3 vs. $10 for the Merc filter or are the threads different?

Changing the oil was not messy. Not a drop got on the outside of the lower unit. A little dripped inside the cowling. The lower unit was another story. I hate replacing the gear oil!

There should be a crossover list in your owners manual

I don't remember seeing one but I'll look again. Thanks.

Nissan says their 4-stroke oil filter part number 3R007-6150M crosses over to the following:

AC PF1237
FRAM PH6607
LEE LF2876HP
MAZDA B6Y1-14-302
MOTORCRAFT FL816
PUROLATOR L14622
SUBARU 15208-KA-010
WIX 51365

I have been using the FRAM filter on my Nissan 18 4-stroke for two years with no problems.

Bruce
