I have an 2002 18hp 4 stroke that quit running and I don't seem to have any spark at the plugs while cranking. I have by passed the shutdown switch and oil pressure shutoff. Is there any way to check the CDI. It was running at 3/4 throttle when it cut off and left me on the river. Any ideas will help. I'm a long way from a Nissan dealer.

You will need to get a service manual that has the test values, but you can check it yourself with a multimeter.

You might want to check & test the coil. The tar encasement of the coil has a tendenacy to melt in the heat and screw it up if it's not in it's proper upright position. That's why you should not lay your outboard down. Most failures are due to this cause.

It is a good idea to check the CD for visual damage, but Tohatsu/Nissan CD modules don't do that...ever. The old Chrysler CD's from the 70's would do that.

Thanks for the suggestions. I recieved the service manual and will be going down to the river to check it out tomorrow. The manual dosn't say but I guess I can disconnect the battery and unplug the CD and coil and check them on the motor. I'll let you know the results of my readings.

Checked the CD uint and only the exciter and pulsar terminals had a reading close to what the manual called for. All the other check points were open. I also found a loose connection between the Battery cable and the fused red wire. I guess this could have caused a voltage spike and kill the CD Unit. So I'll order a new Unit.
