Hi All,

My brother ( who is currently sailing in the Caribbean ) is experiencing an intermittent squealing noise from the motor. When in neutral or in gear. The motor is well maintained. Water flow is good. Doesn't run hot. Not Idling rough. The noise is loud.
Nissan repair manuals appear to be nonexistent.
Authorized repair people in the area seem nonexistent.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Are the current "Tohatsu" 4 strokes actually the same motor?

There are dealers throughout the Caribbean. Service manuals are available from any dealer or online. Nissan, Tohatsu and Mercury are all the same engine. The squealing noise is odd. The old 2-strokes had a bypass checkvalve that could make a squeaking sound if it was salted up. Could you describe the sound a little more?

Hi Elvin

The best I have is as follows quoting from my brother.

Teh squealing seems to have started since we put the boat on the hard in Trinidad. I don't recall hearing the problem before we left. ( that would be about 4 months ago )

The squealing seems to be comming from the engine area. It happens even when I do not move the transmission in gear. It squeals for less than a second then stops. It occurs at high rpm and low rpm. When the motor is running and it squeals, there is no hesitationn or sputtering detected. The engine just purrs along.

He has a "service" manual but wants a "repair" manual

Service and repair manuals are the same thing and you can get them from... He probably has an owners manual. I'll see if anyone else has reported a noise problem of that type on Monday and get back with you. How old is the engine?

Re: Nissan NSF 6A2 Squealing sound

I have a recent reply that gives some additional info.

It was a lot more frequent a while back. While I was working on it, the carburetor suddenly started to overflow (presume stuck float valve). I drained the fuel from the carburetor using the plug in the bottom of the carb. There was some crud on the screw that I cleaned off. After I started it up again, the carb overflow problem was gone. The engine gave out 2 small squeals then stopped squealing for days. It now squeals maybe 1 trip out of three. When it happens it really scares you though. Do not know if these issues are related.

All the lubricant levels in the transmission and the engine are fine and recently replaced.
