Nissan NS8B waterpump Problem

I just recently purchaced a 8hp Nissan. The waterpump wasn't pumping any water at all out. I don't really know a lot about outboard engines, but I decided to take it apart and see if the waterpump needs to be rebuilt. Well it looked pretty good to me. There was a little metal pin that I found laying by the waterpump repeller. It is what engages the waterpump propeller to make it spin. I don't know if it was the problem, or if I just knocked it out myself trying to take it apart. So I put it back in where it belonged, and tried to put the foot back on the rest of the engine. Well now I can't get it up all the way back on there. It's like the bar that engages the forward, neutral, and reverse woun't slide all the way back in the foot. So my questions are, is there a trick to get the foot back on, and what else could be causing my waterpump not to work?

Re: Nissan NS8B waterpump Problem

There's a possibility that it was pumping OK, and you just didn't see it, due to a clogged telltale port. That can usually be cleared with a stiff wire.

Yes, that pin turns the impeller, and it probably dropped when you disassembled the pump housing. BTW, since you went through all the labor to drop the LU, unless the impeller looks virgin, I would change it out. Likewise, if you see any wear on the wear plate or the pump cup, go with a complete pump kit.

As for reassembly, that's a matter of engagement. Usually works best with the motor vertical. Takes some patience and some experience. The driveshaft has to engage the crank, and the water pump tube needs to align with the pump. If the driveshaft doesn't locate into the splines of the crank, it won't go. Might be hitting the exhaust pipe.

The shift rod is a 2-piece unit, with a brass rod coupler joining them. There are stainless roll pins in the rod coupler. To drop the LU, you drive out a roll pin, and the coupler disengages from the rod. if you did it differently, then you probably disengaged the shift rod at the lever. Reassembling that calls for pulling the powerhead from the exhaust housing.

I would encourage you to get a Factory service manual from any Nissan/Tohatsu dealer. A parts catalog is also available on TG's website at http://www.internetoutboards.com/PartsCatalogMenu.htm
