Hi. I have a 2003 Nissan 8HP outboard, model# NS8B 3B2-1. I originally bought this motor for use on a skiff. I wanted a light, smooth, two stroke engine and the engine met all my expectations and then some. Smooth, quiet and powerful.

Well, I sold the skiff and the Nissan 8HP barebones, tiller steered outboard will now be going in the motorwell of a motorsailer. I will have to make some upgrades. Most can wait a while, but some need to be made asap.

First, I would like to switch from the tiller throttle and manual shift to a remote controlled throttle and shift. Does anyone know what's involved and where I can obtain the parts?

Then I would like to convert it to an alternator for battery charging. I have some other options, but if the Nissan conversion is cheap enough, I'll go that route. Again, what's needed and suppliers?

Finally, and this is totally optional, I would like to add a starter to it for remote, electric starting. Is it possible?

I was also hoping to add some control console guages such as tach, temp, water pressure, etc. No rush on that though, and my equipment background will help me to improvise some gadgetry for monitoring the engine from the helm.

I really like this engine, it fits in the motorwell perfectly, and I don't have the bucks for a new outboard. If at all possible, I would like to gradually upgrade this outboard. Any ideas and opinions will be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks,
Denis

Re: Nissan NS8B Upgrades

Not sure if they had electric start and remote control for 8hp engines, but if they did, you will need to call a nissan or tohatsu dealer to get all the part info. I checked on upgrading my Nissan 18E to electric start, a few years ago. To much $$$ for an engine that starts easily. It was considerable more that getting that option, in the first place. New flywheel, starter, wiring, mounting brackets, etc. Even if it is available, doing these mods, is probably going to cost more than your engine is worth.

It would be less to buy a new remote model engine than to convert the one you have.
