Hi guys,
I recently purchased a 1994-95 Nissan 8hp 2 stroke outboard.
It starts first pull and runs perfectly.
My question is that when it is running the water coming out of the indicator/pee hole is intermittent and not a steady stream like on my mercury 2 stroke.
Is this normal for this motor? I'm a assuming that it should be a steady stream.
If I inspect the impeller and it looks to be in good shape what would be the next step?
Thanks for any/all replies

It should be steady. Probably could use a new wp kit (not just the impeller).

1, Make sure the key is on the drive shaft, holding the impeller in place.
2.Make sure the fins are oriented the correct way.
3.If this is your first impeller change, You-tube explains it well.
4.What temp does the stat open in a pan of slowing heating water?
5.Some lower units you can take the water inlet cover off and look inside for blockages.
6. You need a factory service manual,i know where to get it for a fair price, check your private messages.

It would not pump at all if the drive key wasn't installed.

2.Make sure the fins are oriented the correct way.
Completely unimportant. They will flip to follow as the pump turns.

3.If this is your first impeller change, You-tube explains it well.
4.What temp does the stat open in a pan of slowing heating water?
Unimportant unless the motor runs stone cold or is overheating. Opening the thermostat cover may be an issue if the bolts are corroded. In some cases, it's best to not disturb them.

5.Some lower units you can take the water inlet cover off and look inside for blockages.
Yes, the side strainers are removable on these, and that is always worth checking.

6. You need a factory service manual,i know where to get it for a fair price, check your private messages.

Tom, while it may have merit to check the stat if there is a temperature issue, it has absolutely no effect whatsoever on the pee tube flow

If the peeing port of that 8 HP is metal insert W40 red cannula fully in peeing port, spray an overdose of W-40, let penetrate/disolve small obstructions, poke up and down several times the cannula inside peeing port, can do this with OB on while throttling to higher rpm so water pressure helps clear small obstruction. On my 18 need to make this cleaning procedure from time to time or unwanted water intermittence will show up..

Happy Boating
